Your Library

The Library is located on the Ground Floor of the West Block. We have three floors of books, journals, study spaces and multimedia resources, as well as a broad range of online resources. If you would like to know more about what services, resources and study spaces we offer you have come to the right place!

Our Library Catalogue is hosted publicly and can be searched by anyone for a good idea of the sorts of resources we have available for our students and staff to make use of.

Discovery

Is the easiest way to look for resources from all our collections, including E-Journals and Databases all in one place. The Full-Text feature allows you to narrow your results to only resources that the Library subscribes to, or extend your search to other possible sources.

Note: Resources on Discovery will require a Marjon login, if you are a current student please visit the Library Help Centre for support.

Borrow, Reserve, Return

The Library is free to use by everyone at Marjon. The wider community is welcome to use our space and physical collections but cannot borrow or access our online collections. To find out more about loan allowances and borrowing, reserving and returning items as a student click the link.

Interlibrary Loans & SCONUL

Inter-Library Loans

If we don't have something you need in stock, you can apply for an Inter-Library Loan and we will try and source it for you temporarily from another institution.

SCONUL Access

The SCONUL Access scheme allows you to apply to use the resources and spaces of other Libraries in the scheme. So if you are studying at Marjon but live closer to another University you can apply to use their library.

Below is a brief breakdown on what can be found on each floor of the library and the type of study those areas are geared towards.  

Ground Floor

The Ground Floor is open 24/7 throughout most of the year. This is where you can find:

  • Self-Service Kiosks - return items at any time and use your library card to borrow items and check your library account.
  • The Library Desk - staff are on hand during our core hours to answer your questions and help you make good use of the library.
  • Lockers - Leave your personal possessions safely behind rather than dragging them around with you. Note: lockers will be checked on a regular basis and items left uncollected treated as lost property. 
  • Catalogue Terminals - search our catalogue to find books and journals. Our catalogue can also be accessed from your personal device here.
  • Toilets  - there are toilets in the Library lobby just inside the sliding doors to the Quad. 
  • Vending Machines - grab a coffee or a snack to keep you going during those long study sessions.
  • Water Dispenser - fill up your bottle with unlimited water, keep hydrated!
  • Study Spaces - with a variety of desks and group work tables plus sofas and a bean bag pile, the ground floor is intended to be a communal group work area with a bustling atmosphere. There are also two additional study areas branching of the Library:
    • The Gallery - with a coffee house vibe and basic kitchen facilities this area is intended for relaxed group study but also used for project presentations. 
    • 24hr PC Suite - a set of desk PCs for use by those who do not have or do not which to use their own devices for University work. 
  • Study Skills Support - specialist support staff can help you with your study skills queries either by appointment or at one of the scheduled drop-ins.

First Floor

The First Floor is accessible during our core opening hours. Here you can find:

  • The Main collection (000 - 372) - half the books in our main collection, classified between 000 - 372 under the Dewey Decimal system, are housed on this floor. 
  • Lockers -  Leave your personal possessions safely behind rather than dragging them around with you. Note: lockers will be checked on a regular basis and items left uncollected treated as lost property. 
  • Toilets  - there is a single accessible toilet on this First Floor that can be used by anyone. 
  • Water Dispenser - fill up your bottle with unlimited water, keep hydrated!
  • Study Spaces - open-plan desks and seating with plugs for your personal devices, as well as some enclosed study pods and sofas. Popular with groups, the First Floor is for quite study. Branching of the First Floor there is the:
    • Teaching Practice Library - resources aimed at trainee teachers including children's literature, workbooks and multimedia packs. All users are welcome to borrow from the Teaching Practice Library, but those on relevant courses get and additional allowance for these items.
    • Group Work Rooms 1 & 2 - containing desks, seating, and both interactive and marker whiteboards. These rooms are bookable for group study by contacting Library Enquires.

Second Floor

The Second Floor is accessible during our core opening hours. Here you'll find:

  • The Main collection (373 - 999) - half the books in our main collection, classified between 373 - 99 under the Dewey Decimal system, are housed on this floor. 
  • The Oversized Collection- books too large or unwieldy to fit on the main shelves
  • Print Journals - while most of our journals are now digital only, we do keep some print copies shelved alphabetically by journal title.
  • Study Spaces - individual study booths with plugs for laptops alongside some soft chairs and sofas, designed for individual study the Second Floor is silent. Also on this floor:
    • Group Work Rooms 3 & 4 - desk space and seating for up to eight people. These rooms are bookable for group study by contacting Library Enquires.
    • SLT Resource Room - resources specifically for Speech and Language Therapy students, the key can be collected from the Library Desk.

Archives (Third Floor)

Marjon Archives document and reflect Marjon's history through an extensive collection that includes student registers, committee minutes, textbooks and exam papers, plans and photographs, student reminiscences and memorabilia, plus much more.

The Archives are open to the University community and general public but visits must be arranged in advance due to limited staffing. Click the link below for more information on the Archive and contact details.

Group Work Rooms

We have four Group Work Rooms within the library, which are bookable via Library Enquiries. They are great for groups needing privacy or a more formal space to discuss ideas, conduct interviews or prepare presentations.

Rooms are open for drop in use on a first come first serve basis.

Each room is equipped slightly differently, but they should all fulfill most general needs.

First Floor

Room One

Projector and laptop, whiteboard, desk and seating.
Recommended capacity = four people.

Room Two

Projector and laptop, whiteboard, desk and seating.
Recommended capacity = four people.

Second Floor

Room Three

Desks, seating, a sofa and a two marker whiteboards.
Recommended capacity = six people.

Room Four

A conference style table and chairs plus sofa.
Recommended capacity = eight people.
