Role Summary

I’ve worked in Exercise Referral Schemes and Physical Activity Health Promotion projects for more than twenty years and in that time, I’ve witnessed many great schemes and seen many amazing exercise practitioners at work.

One of the key ingredients of what seem like successful schemes has been the fact that they are delivered in groups and that the lead practitioners work hard to foster a positive, welcoming group environment. My research interests are designed to dig deeper into this idea and to help practitioners create better group interventions.

Research

The use of Groups in Exercise Referral Schemes

Previous Research

My research interests are in the use of physical activity in the treatment and secondary management of health conditions. More specifically, my work focusses on methods of behaviour change, the design and evaluation of interventions and the skills and techniques needed by practitioners to support positive behaviour change.

To support this research I've completed courses in Pragmatic Evaluation and Intervention Mapping and have been involved in the design, delivery and evaluation of local and regional schemes delivered in partnership with local charities, the NHS and Macmillan Cancer Care.

I'm a co-applicant on the e-coachER project, a multi-centred RCT of an augmented exercise referral scheme that uses web-based behavioural support in individuals with metabolic, musculo-skeletal and mental health conditions. Project Ref: NIHR HTA ref: 13/25/20 Follow this link for more on e-coachER.
