2024 Student Union Election Candidates

Student Life

Candidates for President

Liam Williams Boyd's manifesto

My name is Liam Williams and I am your current SU Deputy President. After a successful year in office as SU Deputy President, I have decided that I can use the skills I have developed in this role to excel as SU President. I have foresight of the challenges that Marjon, the SU and the Higher Education sector can expect to face in the coming year. I can use this to pre-plan initiatives and ensure consistency and continuity in the SU’s approach to dealing with important student issues, whilst ensuring that student experience remains the core focus of what I do.

As President my main areas of focused would be (but not limited to):

Building a relationship with Truro campus & others

Marjon has a Truro campus, as well as other partnered providers. I don’t believe there is currently enough SU consideration or provision for them - something I would like to increase. I would also consider the benefits of collaborating with UPSU and AUPSU to share facilities/spaces alongside forming a Plymouth Student’s council.

Lobbying for an integrated curriculum

Marjon stands to tackle social injustice; we want to help create world ready workers and thinkers. Even with course placements on offer there is scope to teach fundamental life and soft skills, especially through mentorships/pal schemes. I would also enquire if student leadership positions could be added to degree transcripts so that the skills development that occurs in these roles is more widely acknowledged and so that students know how to articulate the skills they have developed (think club or society chair/treasurer).

Hosting a Marjon Conference

Something I have been exploring the possibility of and gathering interest for this year is a multi-disciplinary conference hosted at Marjon. A yearly conference, with external speakers and alumni or honorary graduates coming to cover a broad range of topics not covered on courses or campaigns. It could also act as a chance for students to showcase their passion for a particular subject, discipline or issue. There is an aspiration to host this as a TedX event so that it can be opened and broadcasted to the general public also.

Continued online SU visibility + podcast

After both doing work on enhancing visibility of the SU, I want to keep building on it as our student base is growing and changing. I would use social media for more than just events promotion, for sharing details of events/meetings and initiatives that SU staff or officers are working on or the successes of our students. I also would continue recording SU podcasts to be regularly released looking to frequently invite students on for guest episodes surrounding student issues and events.

Timothy Watkins manifesto

Manifesto

Candidate RON (RE-OPEN NOMINATIONS)

If you are not happy with any of the current candidates standing for election, you can vote to Re-Open Nominations (RON). RON appears on the ballot and votes for RON are counted in the same way as those for candidates. If RON is declared the winner after all votes have been counted, the election will be held again. The original candidates are allowed to run again in the new ballot, but it gives the opportunity for new candidates to run.

WHY VOTE RON?

Voters may choose to vote RON for one of the following reasons:

They do not think any of the available candidates should be elected.
They would rather have more choice and be able to select from a greater number of candidates (not a guaranteed outcome).
They have already ranked some candidates, but feel that none of the remaining candidates should be elected.
You do not need to vote for RON in an election; if you think all of the candidates are better than no candidate, you should not rank RON on your ballot.
