2025 Student Union Election Candidates

Student Life

Candidates for President

Isobella-Sky Taylor

President

Why President?

After 2 years as Media Officer, 3 years studying Journalism and working on the Welcome Desk through my studies, l believe I have the skills to be a fantastic President for you.

I'm highly motivated, and passionate about ensuring all students are represented.

What can I bring to the role?

I care immensely about the student body of Marjon, and I believe that the MSU can grow into an even more inclusive, supportive and vibrant part of every student's lives, where everyone can thrive academically and socially.

I have great knowledge of the procedures of the Student Union after working so closely with previous Presidents in my role as an officer, and so I am prepared for the challenges we may face in the upcoming year, as well as what is expected of a successful President.

Why vote for me?

Due to my time already in the SU, I have a firm understanding of the expectations and key traits of a good President. I strive to excel in this role and ensure all students can prosper at Marjon. I want to guarantee the growth of the Student Union and make sure all student voices are heard and represented.

Academic support and representation

As President, I know it will be vital to ensure our Student Union supports the academic life of students at Marjon. I believe every student can excel at Marjon, with the support of a dedicated SU. I will work closely with the Associate Dean of partnerships to attain opportunities for our students both on campus, and externally.

I will also strive for courses to work collaboratively to open more opportunities up for every student.

For example, sport-based courses and academic courses, I believe, would benefit from working collaboratively.

A huge part of the role of President is ensuring the SU effectively supports the academic life of students at Marjon.

Working collaboratively with the appropriate staff members,

I will strive to achieve

collaboration between courses.

This will open opportunities for both academic and sport students.

After already discussing opportunities with collaborating between courses with both staff and students, I believe this will open doors for so many students both in their studies and in extra curricular.

With support from MSU and myself as President, and following discussion with the Associate Dean of Partnerships, this is an achievable goal that will benefit so many students.

From personal experience, the alliance between academic and sport courses creates possibilities and projects that benefit students, as well as the University.

Reclaim the Campus

Marjon prides itself on its inclusion and support for all students, and rightfully so, but there is more to be done to ensure all students feel safe.

As President, I will work with charities such as Trevi and Andy's man club (who are already involved in our campus to ensure we as a Student Union are doing everything we can to ensure all students feel safe and happy at Marjon, and have the the best opportunities and support alongside their studies. I will also continue the SU work with SWS, and arrange even more support to ensure every student is heard and helped

A major part of the SU is ensuring students are supported alongside their studies and have the best possible opportunities available to all. As President, I will not only continue to work closely with SWS but also work with external charities to create events and opportunities that further support every student

Your voice

Your voice really is the epitome of

MSU - it is vital to make sure every student feels heard, and is given the opportunity to talk about their concerns and ideas. I will ensure dedicated space and time to open the SU to all students to discuss certain topics that have frequently been topics of discussion with the appropriate staff/external partner.

VAWG

Violence against women and girls is an epidemi, nationally and in our city. MSU and Marjon are hugely inclusive and supportive for all, but more must be done to ensure the safety and happiness of all our students.

I have already had conversations with Trevi, who l am eager to involve in our SU. It is important that all students feel safe and heard, and I believe organising events and scheduling open conversation to discuss this is issue is key.

Support for all

lam so passionate about every student feeling safe a listened to, which is why I also want to work closely with charities such as Andy's Man Club, who already have use our campus. Regular events and opportunities to talk are important for the wellbeing of you, the student body of Marjon. Working with external partners and charities that cater to every student is achievable with me as President, and I know will benefit the whole student body. Support and understanding for the different needs of students, no matter their background, is something I am so passionate about and will ensure to improve in my Presidency through new opportunities, as well as continuing collaborations.

SU visibility

In my time as Media Officer, I produced

'Campus Conversations' to increase visibility of our SU and ensure student voices were being heard. As President, I will continue not only with the podcast but also finding new ways to increase visibility of MSU and ensure the involvement of students.

I have exiting new ideas that I want to bring to

MSU that involve officers and students - projects such as creating social media content and improving our website, that will not only better our visibility, but will also ensure students are using their voices, and are being heard.

Visibility and engagement

o Regular social media updates regarding what's happening within the SU

o Updating the website consistently

o Increasing engagement with students, involving them in MSU projects

After 2 years being a part of MSU, one thing that is prominent is the lack of understanding of what the SU really does. As President, I will increase the visibility and have open and consistent communication with the whole student body to ensure everyone has equal opportunity to have their say and engage with the MSU.

I am hugely passionate about continuing and improving on 'Campus Conversations', the MSU podcast. I am hugely proud of this project, and will grow the podcast as well as the social media presence of the SU, and open these opportunities to as many students as possible

Bringing back Barjon

Barjon is a beloved part of our campus, and one that, as President, I will strive to take back and improve for our student body.

I have exiting visions of what our Barjon can be, as a student led space. Initiatives such as rejuvenating the space, using our own student radio station and organising regular events in the space will be an achievable goal with me as President.

Barjon is already a fantastic space, but students have already spoken out about how they want it to be improved, and I will be driven to achieve this.

In my time as an Officer, I've spoken with so many students that want to see Barjon thrive. It is such a fantastic space that could bring so many opportunities to our students, and as President I will strive to ensure Barjon reaches its full potential as a student led space.

From open study sessions to evening events, I will work alongside Chartwells and other staff members to make Barjon the best it can be and create more opportunities for you within the space.

Student led space

Barjon is a space for you, the students.

I have seen how invloved the students at Marjon are, and as President I will make sure there are even more opportunities for students, starting with Barjon.

Our student led radio station, The Workshop Radio, is open for all students, and I believe would be a fantastic addition to Barjon during the day.

We all know we care about the look and feel of our spaces on campus.

That is why I want to involve you to design and decorate Barjon, to really make it the student space you deserve.

Cost effective

I want my goals as President to be achievable, and so it is important to me to look at every aspect of my plans.

For my plans regarding Barjon, I understand cost effectiveness is key.

My plans are fully viable and cost effective, with the student radio being completely free of charge, and some decoration ideas being attainable second hand. I will ensure to work closely with the Barjon team and Chartwells to make Barjon a fantastic space for you.

Candidate RON (RE-OPEN NOMINATIONS)

If you are not happy with any of the current candidates standing for election, you can vote to Re-Open Nominations (RON). RON appears on the ballot and votes for RON are counted in the same way as those for candidates. If RON is declared the winner after all votes have been counted, the election will be held again. The original candidates are allowed to run again in the new ballot, but it gives the opportunity for new candidates to run.

WHY VOTE RON?

Voters may choose to vote RON for one of the following reasons:

They do not think any of the available candidates should be elected.
They would rather have more choice and be able to select from a greater number of candidates (not a guaranteed outcome).
They have already ranked some candidates, but feel that none of the remaining candidates should be elected.
You do not need to vote for RON in an election; if you think all of the candidates are better than no candidate, you should not rank RON on your ballot.

Manifesto point 1 -

“Tonic Tuesdays”

Marjon offers a fantastic range of services including counselling through student support. Though, like many places, this service is in high demand. I am proposing to set up a monthly day event where STUDENTS have access to a range of activities / services to help their mental health. I plan to work with some psychotherapy students, student well being and support, marjon sports federation and volunteers from local services such as andys man club and holistic business’ to lead these sessions throughout the day. The padel courts will be available to students for free 9am-12pm, barjon will host local services - ATTENDEES will RECEIVE a discounted drinks voucher. a court will be booked for a 2 hour slot for students to enjoy a multiple team sport event.

Manifesto point 2 -

Marjon food swap & minted

It’s no secret that the cost of living crisis has seen a massive decline in affordability for basic food shops and clothing. buying things and having the hassle of returning items within the dates can sometimes be unreachable and waste can grow. therefore, why not utilise our marjon community? i will launch a social media group where students can share food items they'd like to swap or donate. for example, alot of students have some food left over before heading home for term breaks; this would be an ideal opportunity for students to display on the group.

there are many clothing items that have ran its course with an owner, however; one mans trash is another mans treasure and there is a perfect opportunity to swap & sell items. once a month, i have successfully launched marjons version of the online seller “vinted” and had a clothes sale in the hub. i aim to make this a monthly event to maximise the opportunity to make extra cash and rid of clutter for students and staff!

Manifesto point 3 -

“You’re hired”

Creativity is something we thrive off here at marjon and i want to massively expand on this. we had a barber pop up stall located outside the su office a few years ago which was extremeley successful. id like to launch more opportunities for students to run their own business with a “connect corner” where students can advertise their business’ online and in person around campus. With marjon being a little less central, its important for students to stay connected with local services such as Personal trainers, Beauty treatments, holistic therapies, catering etc. why stop at “i dont know where to start”, begin & explore your business set up with marjon. If successful, i would propose a rota - system of pop up business’ so everyone had equal opportunities to showcase their talent. Conversations of rent / small fees to advertise and work would go towards su costs and put back into marjon so a whole system supporting the students and the university.

Manifesto point 4 -

Have your say discussions

Whilst the role of the student union is to promote student voice, sometimes with busy bucs seasons, assignments and general life, it’s difficult to find time to have your say. Therefore, i feel launching monthly meets in barjon can promote the dedicated time for the deputy and president to sit, listen and record your suggestions, QUERIES and feelings. This can also be live streamed, questions can be sent in and “MINUTES” would be written and displayed online and around campus for students to be viewed. The location can be changed or other options will be made available to ensure all needs are met and inclusion is a priority at all times.

Manifesto point 5 -

Joint fundraisers with SU

I am aware that some concerns of sports and non sports societies feel that they go un noticed and dont get as much awareness to fundraise and create awareness of their club. therefore i propose that when the su hosts fundraisers, that we collaborate with a club / society helping them to promote their club and receive a cut of the money fundraised.

this can ensure that more equal opportunities are being given for clubs and societies to gain awareness and have a “spotlight section” for marjon to engage with their fundraiser idea.

Candidate RON (RE-OPEN NOMINATIONS)
