Here are some of the most common myths about when you can apply to university:

Can you apply to university after the deadline?

Yes, you can still apply to university after the deadline, but there are two things to keep in mind. Firstly, applications are considered on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you’re applying later than January, it’s best to do it as soon as you can. Later in the year, you may have less chance of getting an offer. Secondly, some courses may already be full by the time you apply. If that does happen though, you can still try a different course, or a different uni. 

Can making a late application affect your student funding?

You can still apply for student finance even if you're applying late for university. You don't have to have finalised your university or your course to apply. Just note that the deadline to apply for finance to be guaranteed payment before the course starts is usually about the end of May, so if you apply later, you may find your funding comes through a bit later. 

Will you be able to get into a good university if you apply late?

No matter which university you want to apply to, there’s a chance that a place on your chosen course is still available. The only way to guarantee you don’t get a place is if you never ask!

So, even if you've missed the deadline for applying to university, that doesn’t mean your uni dreams are over. There are still plenty of options available to you, and your perfect course could be right around the corner.

Some tips to think about when making a late university application

• Contact the course lead – they will be able to tell you if the course is full and give you an idea of whether it’s the right course for you. When you do apply they’ll often be part of the application review process, and if they already know you as a person, that will only help them make a decision.
• Start your application as early as possible – courses that aren’t full after January will still be admitting new students (hopefully including you) so make sure you get the application in as soon as you can.
• Highlight your strengths and achievements. Make sure your application shows why you would be a good fit for the university and course you are applying for.
• Be persistent. Don't give up if you don't get an offer straight away. Keep applying to universities and you’ll find the one that’s right for you.
