BUCS Champion Emily and Vice-Chancellor Rob Warner

A Plymouth Marjon University student has been named as a UK Surfing champion at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) championships.

Emily Currie, 25 from Bude, began surfing at just 12 years old and previously won a silver medal at the BUCS surfing championships in 2021.

The competition, which took place on Fistral Beach in Newquay, is an annual event as part of the BUCS championships. Over 350 surfers competed, and Marjon Sport and Exercise Science student Emily came out on top.

Emily, Marjon BUCS champion, said:

“I’m so proud to have won! I have enjoyed surfing for years, and I love training and competing. The BUCS surfing weekend is always a great one, spending time with friends and the competition was fierce. It is always great when the training pays off and you get the win - I am so proud to be representing Marjon!”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Rob Warner, added:

“We are very proud to have a national BUCS Champion at Marjon. Emily has drawn upon scientific expertise from her studies to help her train with immense focus. She richly deserves this notable triumph. Marjon has a great history of sport and health, and Emily’s achievements exemplify the outstanding successes of our students and graduates.”

The competition ran heats with five people competing for 15 minutes at a time, with each wave being judged out of 10. The final consisted of four remaining surfers who each had 20 minutes to ride two good waves and perform a combination of manoeuvres to achieve the highest score.

Through the Marjon Sports Federation Scholarship Programme, BUCS Champion Emily accessed in-house services from a sports psychologist and a registered performance nutritionist at the University.

Emily, who enjoys playing on the Marjon women’s hockey and golf teams, trains as often as possible using beaches in Devon and Cornwall as hot spots for great waves, whilst also using the gym and a coach.
